The Greeks call this area Pilio (Πήλιο), but somehow in English it became "Pelion". It refers to the peninsula extending south west from Volos and going all the way down and round to the island of Trikeri. The southern half of the Pilio peninsula is lower lying and covered for the most part by olive groves. The northern half of the Pilio peninsula is dominated by Mount Pilio, which rises to 1,624 meters. The highest village is Hania (1,200m), which has a very popular ski centre.
On the west side of Pilio is the Pagasitikos Gulf, with attractive seaside villages like Milina and Afissos, and on the east of Pilio is the Aegean Sea, and a coastline dotted with villages waiting to be discovered. The villages have taken pains to preserve the traditional style of Pilio architecture: well-crafted stone houses with slate roofs.
In general, the Pilio area is a great holiday destination in Greece for discerning travellers who want to enjoy Greece at its best. Mount Pilio is one of the lushest and greenest mountains in Greece, with wooded slopes that run all the way down to unspoilt beaches. Wondering about how to get to Pilio / Pelion? A few budget airlines (like Ryan Air) now have regular flights to the Pilio area, using the airport just north of the town of Almyros (listed as Volos airport), about 40km south west of Volos. With Ryan Air at the moment you have a choice of flying to Greece via Milan or Frankfurt. Another airline to check is Monarch, which serves the Pilio region via the same Volos airport. Alternatively, Easy Jet has direct flights to Thessaloniki, from which there are comfortable intercity coaches direct to Volos.
Will it be necessary to hire a car on Pilio (Pelion)? Whichever holiday villa you choose on Pilio, you are guaranteed to have interesting walks in all directions - up to mountain villages, through the forests on the slopes of Pilio or along the coast. However, for at least some of the time you will want to explore further afield, and although there is a local bus service for the main Pilio villages linking them to Volos, it will probably be too infrequent for you. Cars can be hired in Volos.
